GEORG BASELITZ

Georg Baselitz (* 1938 in Deutschbaselitz/Saxony), german painter and sculptor, studied from 1957 to 1963 at the Academy of  Fine and Applied Art in East- and later in West-Berlin. His paintings  "Die große Nacht im Eimer (The Big Night Down the Drain)" and "Der nackte Mann (The naked Man)" were seized during one of his first exibitions in the gallery Werner & Katz in Berlin. In 1969 he worked at his first painting showing a motive upside down. In 1979 Baselitz started working on sculptures. In 1998 two large format paintings were completed for the Reichstag in Berlin. In 2005 Baselitz started the "Remix series". Baselitz is a honorary professor at the Royal Academy of Arts London and at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. He taught at the University of the Arts in Berlin from 1983 to 1988 and from 1992 to 2003.

1938 Born on Januar 23th 1938 as Hans-Georg Bruno Kern in Deutschbaselitz, Saxony
1956 Studies at the Hochschule für bildende und angewandte Kunst" in Ost-Berlin. He studied painting with Walter Womacka and Herbert Behrens-Hangler"
1957 After one year Baeslitz is dismissed of the Academy because of »social policital immaturity«. He continued studies till 1963 Hi contunied studies under Hann Trier at the Academy of Fine Arts in West-Berlin
1960 The »Rayski Portraits« are his first recognized works
1961 He takes the pseudonym Georg Baselitz according to his place of birth
1962 Marriage with Elke Kretzschmar and birth of son Daniel
1963 First Single-Exhibition in Gallery Werner & Katz in Berlin, which became an instant scandal. Von den ausgestellten Bildern werden »Die große Nacht im Eimer« (1962/63) und »Der nackte Mann« (1962) von der Staatsanwaltschaft beschlagnahmt. Der anschließende Prozeß endet erst 1965 mit der Rückgabe der Bilder
1964 First etchings are formed in a print shop in Wolfsburg Castle, Lower Saxony
1965 Scholarship of the Villa Romana in Florence
Back in Berlin he produced the series »Heros« (Helden) till 1966
1966 Birth of his son Anton and move to Osthofen close to Worms
1968 Scholar of the Culture Circle of the Federation of the German Industry"
1969 Begin of upside down paintings, one of the first paintings is »Der Wald auf dem Kopf« (the wood upside down)
1970 First exhibition of upside down paintings in the gallery in the Lindenstraße (Berlin)
1971 Move to »Forst an der Weinstraße«
1972 Atelier in Musbach
1975 Move to Derneburg near Hildesheim
1976 Till 1981 addeitional Atelier in Florence
1977 Vocation to the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, he became Professor in 1978
1981 Additional Atelier in Castiglion Fiorentino near Arezzo (Italy) until 1987
